Tips on how to give a talk that people remember

Here're some tips on how to give a talk that people actually remember:

  1. Know your audience beforehand.
Think about the expected average expertise in the room and calibrate your material to that.

  2. Don't dumb down your explanations.
That's lazy. Instead learn to make the road to understanding complex topics much simpler.

  3. Your goal, should always be to provide maximum value to the audience stop focusing too much on how you look, how you sound and other tiny peripherals.

  4. Always present your agenda in the beginning of the talk.
Let people know what they're gonna learn at the end of the session.

  5. Get comfortable with pauses. Don't try to fill in the silence with filler words.

  6. keep your slides minimal. Five bullet points maximum per slide and even that's generous. The moment there's too much text on the board, people start reading it instead of listening to you. Slides are the visual & you are the explanation. Never read off too much from your slides.

  7. If the topic is complex start by connecting the concept to something the audience already knows.

  8. Add memes to your slides. everybody knows it. duh. (it's non-negotiable)

  9. And when someone asks a question you don't know the answer to just say "i don't know" rather than blabbering on and on and trying to fool the audience.
